"R.O.M., Rights of Minorities"

R.O.M. Dossier | R.O.M., Baia Mare, Trakya University, Open Society FoundationsThe so-called "Roma" in Europe are about 12 million, characterized by complex historical, social and cultural diversities. Many are integrated for generations but thousands of them still live in extreme marginalization and poverty, exacerbated by the policies of some governments and by the increasingly frequent episodes of discrimination and racism. Three rounds of surveys in 2015 will examine the phenomenon in France, Italy, Spain and Turkey.

From the gypsies to the Roma, old and new mythologies

Nathalie Galesne

R.O.M. Dossier | R.O.M., Baia Mare, Trakya University, Open Society FoundationsIf it was possible to reconstruct an inventory of the discourses of refusal against the "gypsies" in more than two centuries, it is today, if anything, the figure of the "Roma" and especially the "Roma issue" that channel all the stereotypes and fuel the stigmatization. But are we really conscious of how these ideas are propagated? No doubt, the doxa masquerades what actually is the result of falsifications and mythology as natural. A journey into French "Romfobia"....

Journalists and politicians often contribute to feed them, turning the Roma and Sinti in perfect "scapegoats" to direct the anger and frustration of public opinion, turning it away from the discomforts caused by poor governance and crisis. The reportage by Babelmed.
