Factory to employ Roma in Turkey | Roma Confederation of Turkey, Kocaeli, Roma PeopleRoma Confederation of Turkey announced plans to start a textile factory that will employ Roma people living in the northwestern province of Kocaeli.

The president of the confederation Ahmet Çokyaşar said that the project aiming at reducing the high unemployment rates among the Roma population is about to be finalized.

The project was undertaken with the support of the Development Ministry, the Eastern Marmara Development Agency and the Kocaeli Roma People Associations’ Federation. 

“We are now working to establish a textile factory in which 150-200 new jobs will be created for Roma people in Kocaeli. We want to help the Roma have a more valuable presence in the society in a more professional way as tinsmiths, basket weavers and blacksmiths.With the support of the Development Ministry we’ll break new ground and we'll also use our own sources. The construction of the factory will cost around 2.5 million Turkish Liras, some of which has already been secured. The factory products will also be marketed by Roma people” Çokyaşar said.

Saying one of the biggest problems of the Roma people was unemployment, Çokyaşar noted the project was aimed at seeking solutions to this problem.
