1st Edition of the Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival | festivalThe 1st Edition of the Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival , project of Baad el Bahr Cultural Association will take place in Cairo (various venues) from the 5th to the 12th of May 2010.
is an initial attempt to create a stable platform for reflection on literature on the Southern Shore of the Mediterranean. The festival aims to be a space for sharing insights and a forum for independent thinking, for discovering and shedding light on the value of cultural differences. This year the Festival will concentrate on Arabic and romance languages, with guests from Italy, France, Spain, Egypt, Lebanon and Algeria. Interpreters will be available for all of these languages.

The organisers have chosen to focus on the theme of humour, more specifically on intelligent and politically committed humour, clear evidence of the vitality of contemporary thought one that opens the mind, shatters constructions of a reality with only one face. Satire in the media, comic writing for cinema and television, the female perspective, literature as a portrayal of the absurd, and the hilarious paradoxes that permeate everyday life will be tackled.

The term “literary”, used here in the widest sense of the word, encompasses texts written for different functions, from the novel, to song, to theatre, to cinema, to cabaret. Many figures from the literary world, but also from journalism, television and publishing, all well known in their own countries, but much less so in the rest of the Mediterranean basin, will come together on the stages of various theatres and cultural centres in the city, with shows and debates.
