A celebration of Arab and Kurdish cultures in Arbil (Part I)
A celebration of Arab and Kurdish cultures in Arbil (Part I) | babelmed | women - migration - mediterraneanAs the school’s headmaster, Professor Lutfi, took us on a tour of the town in his BMW, he showed us the site where the vast new airport was to be built. We could have guessed as much ourselves: everywhere in this far-flung town they were rushing to create what hadn’t existed before

The beautiful final day of the World Cup
The beautiful final day of the World Cup | babelmed | women - migration - mediterraneanThe 9th of July 2006, the World Cup was coming to an end, the world, Lebanon included, was debating about the Zinedine Zidane incident and the infamous head-butt. On the 12th of July, Lebanon was forced to remember though that this internationally repudiated act of violence was no more than a head-butt to the chest of another player.

Acre: the evocation of history and the Intifada of the present
Acre: the evocation of history and the Intifada of the present | babelmed | women - migration - mediterraneanAcre’s Arab citizens, like their compatriots elsewhere, suffer the effects of discrimination, marginalization and successive displacement policies. Yet an instinctive desire for life continues to produce art in all its forms and generate myriad means of rejecting this constant oppression.

Tommaso Prestieri, the art-loving Camorrist
Catherine Cornet
Tommaso Prestieri, the art-loving Camorrist | babelmed | women - migration - mediterraneanHe wears the elegance of the southern countries: a shirt and a black tie, a light suit. When he opens his arms to speak/lecture, he gives off the vital force that characterizes the children of Naples. Tommaso Prestieri belongs to a powerful family of Camorrists in Secondigliano. He is also a slightly unusual character who sets tongues wagging as much for his various criminal activities as for his presence in the art scene: art is his pet vice. While still a fugitive, he was arrested when he attended a concert at the Bellini Theater—right downtown.

A celebration of Arab and Kurdish cultures in Arbil (Part II)
A celebration of Arab and Kurdish cultures in Arbil (Part II) | babelmed | women - migration - mediterraneanDuring Al-Mada event in Arbil, President Jalal Talabani was quick to remind the gathering that Kurdistan was part of Iraq, setting the tone for all subsequent discussion of the subject. Care must be taken that pride in one’s local identity does not move beyond the bound of propriety and slip into excess.

The Algerian government wants to eliminate small political parties
The Algerian government wants to eliminate small political parties | babelmed | women - migration - mediterraneanIf participation in the 17 May 2007 parliamentary elections was listless, it was because the profusion of ‘small lists’ confused the electorate and discredited the ballot—at least so say the FLN and the RND, Algeria’s two government parties. Naturally, their miracle solution is to eliminate the small political parties that make up the competition. It’s a move that only reinforces growing dissatisfaction with the political process, a disaffection that has already extracted its price from Algeria’s main parties as support dwindles alarmingly for one and stagnates for the other.

A night in la Gatta: Migrant women prostitutes in Naples
A night in la Gatta: Migrant women prostitutes in Naples | babelmed | women - migration - mediterraneanI arrive at la Gatta on a Vespa with the towering Carletto. Lilia, the Moldavian mediator, is already waiting for us in front of the little camper that is the physical incarnation of La Gatta (The Cat). After a number of interviews with the staff of the Dedalus collective, I’m going out with them tonight to trail the social cooperative’s cutting-edge project: the little camper with the black cat emblazoned on its side that has been roaming the streets of Neapolitan prostitution for the past seven years.
