The Long Run

mena 545

A running competition, with independence from the family as the finish. Like a “long run”, as Visualizing Impact has titled this impressive infographic. And if you are a man living in Middle East and North Africa, you might arrive latest among men in all other developing regions, including Sub-Saharan Africa, by far and large the poorest region of the world.

In East Asia, where youth unemployment rate is at 10 per cent, the average age at marriage is 25 years for women and 27 for men.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, where a high rate of early marriage (before 18 years) still persists, in particular among girls, and where the unemployment rate reaches 12 per cent, the average age at marriage is 22 years for women and 27 for men.

In Latin America, with an average unemployment rate at 14 per cent, the average age at marriage grows to 25 years for women and 27 for men.

But it is in the MENA region that we see a leap, corresponding to an average youth unemployment rate at 27 per cent: women marry at 24 years, while men only at 29 on average, postponing the moment when they will finally become independent from their family of origin.

The consequences are impressive: according to an estimation by ILO, if youth unemployment in MENA were cut by half, the region’s GDP could grow by more than 25 billion dollars by 2018.
