Piri Reis World Map in Rome

map500 250The Ottoman admiral and cartographer Piri Reis is the guest of honor at an exhibition in Rome, on the 500th anniversary of his famous world map.

The exhibition “Piri Reis 1513 World Map: 500 Years of Mystery”, organized by Turkish ceramics producer Kale Group, was opened on November 29 as part of the events to celebrate the 500th year of the world map, and can be visited until December 20 at Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Center (Palazzo Lancellotti).

The exhibition was created during a workshop between September 16-30, held in the northwestern province of Çanakkale’s Çan district with the participation of Italian Ivo Sassi, Greek Kostas Karakitsos, Egyptian Ossama Emam,French Elisabeth Le Retif, Spanish Xavier Monsalvatje and U.S. Charles Wissinger, as well as Turkish ceramic artists İsmail Bütün, Burak Çiftçi, Ayşegül Şahin and Mustafa Tunçalp. 

The exhibition features 90 large maps by Piri Reis and nearly 30 ceramic artworks. 
The Turkish Ambassador to Rome, Hakkı Akil, who hosted the event, spoke about the importance of Piri Reis, saying, ”Piri Reis was one of the most important cartographers in his era and one of the most famous admirals in the Ottoman maritime history. His book ‘Kitab-ı Bahriye’ is one of the most used maps in the field of geography.”

Piri Reis, who lived between 1470-1553, completed his well-known world map in 1513. UNESCO declared the year 2013 as the year of 500th anniversary of Piri Reis World Map.
