Waterfront at the Hangar, UMAM Beirut

Located in the Dahiyeh, in Beirut’s Southern area, the HANGAR is an independent platform that facilitates debate and exchange through art and culture. It seeks to stimulate reflection on past individual and collective memories of Lebanon by promoting artistic and cultural practices related to the use of archives. This independent space is built as an extension of UMAM, a non-profit organisation dedicated to documentation and research on memory with the aim of coming to terms with Lebanon’s war-torn past.
Waterfront at the Hangar, UMAM Beirut

The HANGAR, is presenting the video and sound installation by Hala Younes and Christophe Hauser until the 26th of February 2012.
The exhibition investigates the future of Beirut’s new waterfront and its relationship to the city. Unlike Beirut’s Zeytouna Bay, packed with trendy restaurants, with no more place for urban wandering, the two-kilometre seawall reinforcing the ‘Normandy’ landfill is a no man’s land, secluded from the city, waiting for the settlement of new urban practices. The installation explores this terra incognita, a complex machine springing up from the sea and the imagination of the hydraulic engineers. This performing device traps the waves, producing strange noises that sound to our ears like the recollection of a missing Atlantis, lost memories of a sunken city: the overlapping memories of the passersby as the last remains of an impossible history.
Hala Younes’s exhibition is in line with UMAM’s mission to reflect on urban history through creative interpretations of archives.
