Features: Women, to be 20 in the Mediterranean

Features: Women, to be 20 in the MediterraneanThey are called, Amal, Lila, Amal, Lila, Joëlle, Ghania, Amina, Nicole, Fédia, Sarah, Laurie, Celia, Doris… They are 20 to 30 years old and live on the Northern or Southern shore of the Mediterranean. They’ve accepted to speak to our women journalists for the extensive feature launched by Babelmed « Women : to be 20 years old in the Mediterranean » together with L’Orient le Jour and Bianet and realised thanks to the support of the Anna Lindh Foundation.

All these girls have something in common : if they are more or less shy when speaking about sex, they all want to get married and have kids. For some it is a project to carry on independently, for others it is the only way to definitively leave the family house.

Paradoxically, love at 20 years old is not particularly romantic in France, Spain or Italy where young women have a serene relationship to love and sex. In Palestine or Egypt where love is prevented by a lot of different factors romanticism is particularly strong. In this case, young women often hide their love from their family –also thanks to their mothers’ complicity.…

Virginity until the wedding takes place seems still a “must be”, even in Lebanon, where girls can look very provocative but behave according to the social rules. The “sinners” can nevertheless use plastic surgery if needed…

However, as underlined by the Algerian and Moroccan journalists, despite all the different conditions lived in Algiers, Casa, Beirut or Paris, going through the Palestinian camps and the Turkish countryside these Young women are looking for more autonomy through work and studies.
