3d Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press

This year, as a sign of the European Commission’s commitment to the promotion of human rights and freedom of expression in the Mediterranean region and the Arab world, the award is open to candidates who are nationals of eight additional countries: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Libya, Qatar, Kuwait, and Yemen.
One journalist from the written press, whose editorial or investigative article was published between 15 March 2007 and 15 March 2008, will be chosen and awarded with EUR 15.000. The theme must be related to the rule of law - good governance, struggle against corruption, freedom of expression, human rights etc.
Furthermore, one young researcher, aged under 35, whose research document, written during the 2007 academic programme, addresses the rule of law or freedom of the press, will be chosen and awarded EUR 10.000.
Candidates have until 30 March 2008 to apply, while the award ceremony will be held on the 2 June 2008 in Beirut.
