Host Progect (Hospitality, Otherness, Society, Theatre) | University of Salento, Astragali Teatro, ITI Paris, Province of Lecce, Gal Terra d’Arneo, Babelmed, Satiriko Theatre of Nicosia, Zante TheatreThe project HOST is launched by the University of Salento - Department of History, Society and Human Sciences – in collaboration with Astragali Teatro, ITI Paris, the Province of Lecce, Gal Terra d’Arneo, Babelmed, Satiriko Theatre of Nicosia and Zante Theatre.

Salento, Cadiz, the Ionian Islands and then Nicosia and Paris: these are the places where the project "HOST - Hospitality, Otherness, Society, Theatre" will be implemented. Co-financed by the European Union in the framework of the Culture Programme 2007-2013, the project will be coordinated by the University of Salento - Department of History, Society and Human Sciences – in collaboration with the UNESCO International Theatre Institute in Paris, the University of Cadiz, the Province of Lecce, Astragali Teatro in Lecce, the Satiriko Theatre of Nicosia, Zante’s Theatre , Gal Arneo Land and Babelmed.

The project intends to launch a study on issues related to the dialectic of immigration/hospitality proper to places that like Salento, Cadiz and the Ionian Islands, follow substantially similar dynamics. During the first half of the last century, all these lands have witnessed the departure of young people from their homelands to look for work elsewhere. In recent years, these same lands have inversely become lands hosting migrants and refugees, men and women fleeing war and poverty.

The concrete experience of these men and women, their past memory will be collected through narration. This will be one of the project’s main focus. The other activities include an artistic performance that reproduces the whole texture of human lives and experiences through theatre.

Narration, research and theatre will be strongly intertwined. The two Universities will be in charge of the fieldwork and research while the theatres will transform narration into a theatrical performance. From Salento to Cadiz, the Ionian Islands to Paris and Nicosia, the HOST project will be organising artistic residencies inviting artists of international renown. In addition, a dense network of workshops, meetings, workshops and performances will also be organised.
