Dar Al-Ma’mûn is an international center for artistic residencies located 14 km from Marrakesh in the village of Tassoultante (Ourika valley). Aiming to support emerging artists in visual arts, promoting African and Moroccan culture and mobility, this project contributes to culture as an integral part of local socio-economic development.
Dar Al-Ma’mûn includes artist studios, an art centre, a research centre dedicated to literary translation (Arabic-English-French) and a library specializing in social sciences, literature, poetry, aesthetics and art history. Throughout the year, Dar Al-Ma’mûn offers lectures addressing social themes and organises cultural events.
Encouraging local development
Dar Al-Ma’mûn is a non-profit organisation. It was born from the idea that culture is an essential factor in local economic and social development.
Yearly programs dedicated to those in the immediate environment of Dar Al-Ma’mûn are initiated: literacy, non-formal educational programs, access to reading, contemporary art and literature awareness activities, rediscovery of heritage and local crafts. These programs are also aimed at other audiences such as university and art school students, authors, translators, intellectuals and artists are invited to share their ideas.
Supporting the emerging art scene.
The artists’ residency does not only provide space. It also promotes the professionalization of artists by accompanying the production of works and the development of the professional network. Professionals are invited to play the role of mentors with resident artists and other beneficiaries, setting up consultations, and offer a program of personalized workshop visits.
Alternate residency programs are also developed to offer the possibility of staying in another artists’ structure abroad to the residents.
