The SABIRMaydan forum will be held on September 28 in Messina as part of the SabirFest festival of Mediterranean literature.

Organized by the Italian NGO COSPE and the Sicily-based publishing house Mesogea, the forum aims to bring together young protagonists of the Arab Springs and European democracy movements of recent years. It will be partially funded through an ongoing crowdsourcing initiative (www.produzionidalbasso.it) to cover the guests' travel expenses.

The forum will seek to help shape a Mediterranean citizenship, with a view towards becoming an annual event. This year's forum is dedicated to the Italian Jesuit priest Paolo Dall'Oglio, taken hostage in northern Syria just over a year ago, and the Egyptian blogger Alaa Abdel Fattah, who is serving a 15-year prison sentence. The SabirFest festival of Mediterranean literature will be held September 25-28, and takes its name from 'Sabir', the lingua franca in which navigators and coastal populations communicated from the Middle Ages to the 19th century in the Mediterranean Sea. Dozens of national and international guests are slated to take part in the festival.
