On Friday, 30th November, at! 6.30pm, at the Malta Migration Museum, Dar l-Emigrant, in Valletta, next to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Fondation de Malte is launching a book of poems in Maltese by Adrian Grima translated into French by Paris-based cultural operator and writer Elizabeth Grech, called Ici arrivent les mouette / Hawn Jid!ol il-Gawwi.

 

Entrance is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

The launch will be followed by a reception.

 

The book is a bilingual collection of 50 poems, some of which are being published here for the first time, written over a span of 20 years, from It-Trumbettier (1999) to Denb i -Vlegga/La coda della freccia (Lushir, Italy, 2011).

 

The translations are by Elizabeth Grech, who studied anthropology at the!University of Malta and Aix-en-Provence, and has now being living in France since 1999. As part of her work at the Fondation Rene Seydoux pour le monde méditerranéen in Paris, //Elizabeth GrechElizabeth GrechElizabeth Grech promotes literature in the Mediterranean and has taken part in numerous conferences and research projects in the region.

The French writers Mohammed El Amraoui and Philippe Parizot-Clerico (who wrote the preface to this collection) collaborated with Elizabeth Grech on this literary translation project.

 

The book launch will be an event in itself with readings in Maltese by Adrian Grima, accompanied by Samwel Grima on the bass guitar, readings in French by Elizabeth Grech, and the projection of photos by Philippe Parizot-Clerico and Elizabeth Grech (who took the photo that appears on the cover of the book designed by the Glasgow-based artist Marco Scerri.

//Adrian GrimaAdrian GrimaAdrian Grima is a prize-winning author of poetry and prose published in Malta and many other countries in 16 different languages who has been invited to read his work at many international festivals. Solo collections of his work translated into other languages have appeared in Berlin, Malta and Italy. His most recent publications are two books for adolescents, Din Mhix Log!ba (short stories) u Vlegga Kkargata (poems), with paintings by Karen Caruana. Adrian Grima teaches Maltese literature in the Department of Maltese at the University of Maltese and is the coordinator of Inizjamed.

The Fondation de Malte, set up in 1998 on the initiative of Mrs Mercedes Busuttil, is an international NGO, based in Malta, dedicated to cultural affairs, environmental concerns, education and human rights.
